August 2024 Update: Enjoying summertime in the community

The month of August is a time to replenish your body and soul with a little downtime with family members combined with some warm summer weather. I find it’s also a time to have meaningful engagements with some community leaders and constituents. And of course, attend some community events. I am pleased to share some highlights from the activities I participated in during the month of August 2024.

Meeting with Kelowna Mayor Tom Dyas: I had a productive breakfast meeting with Mayor Tom Dyas of Kelowna during a visit to the Okanagan. We discussed various initiatives and shared insights on urban development and community engagement, which I believe will foster a stronger relationship between our cities. Like Vancouver, Kelowna is experiencing rapid growth and demand for city services. Tom and I both serve on the BC Urban Mayors’ Caucus, where I am Mayor Sim’s designated representative.

Meeting with Louise Schwarz: Louise Schwarz, co-founder of the Recycling Alternative company, is not only a leader in environmental stewardship and sustainability in Vancouver but is also a longtime friend going back to our time together at the University of British Columbia. We met to discuss innovative recycling solutions and sustainability practices, and how to take them to the next level through a comprehensive ‘Green Innovation District” plan. It’s an appealing idea, and I’ve made sure our City planning teams are aware of it.

Light Up Chinatown Opening Ceremony: Light Up Chinatown! is a celebration of the living heritage and diverse history of Vancouver’s Chinatown, produced by the Vancouver Chinatown Foundation led by Carol Lee. The vibrant lights and festivities bring joy and and spirit of unity to all who attend this vibrant annual event. I was pleased to attend along with several Council representatives.

Granville Block Party: The Granville Block Party hosted by the Downtown Vancouver Association continues to get better each year, creating a fantastic atmosphere, filled with live performances, dance music, food, and entertainment that attracts families and residents from all over the city. I was delighted I could join my colleague Sarah Kirby-Yung at this vibrant street party.

Introducing Vancouver Council Chamber ISS of B.C. Youth: I had the honour of introducing a group of youth from the Immigrant Services Society of B.C. interested in elected office to the Vancouver council chamber. These young leaders, aged 14 to 24, are training to become future community leaders and have a keen interest in local government. It was inspiring to see their enthusiasm and commitment to making a positive impact.

Other August highlights:

  • International Overdose Awareness Day Organized by Together We Can: August 31 marks International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD), a global campaign to end overdose. We remember loved ones who have died from drug overdose and acknowledge the grief of those left behind and encourage support and recovery for everyone impacted by substance use and overdose. Vancouver’s event organized by Together We Can at Norquay Park was a poignant experience for those in attendance. It was my honour to take part in the proceedings by bringing greetings from the City.
  • Picnic at Grays Park: The picnic hosted by MP Don Davies (Vancouver-Kingsway) at Grays Park was a delightful event and a chance to connect with community members in a relaxed setting, discuss local issues, and enjoy the beautiful summer weather.

Thank you for your continued support. I look forward to seeing you at future events and working together to make Vancouver an even better place to live.
