December 2024 Update: wrapping up the year with a bow
As we bid farewell to 2024 and look ahead to 2025, I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible events, milestones, and community spirit that have made this year so special for the City of Vancouver. It has been an honour to represent our city and work alongside so many passionate individuals and organizations dedicated to making Vancouver a vibrant, inclusive, and thriving community.
On a work note, I’m really delighted to be taking on two new roles in 2025. One as Chair of the PNE (Pacific National Exhibition) Board of Directors, and the 2nd as a new board director for Invest Vancouver. Both provide exciting opportunities to grow our local economy.
Celebrating Community and Cultural Connections
This December, I was privileged to represent Vancouver at the celebration of H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great’s Birthday Anniversary, Thailand’s National Day, and Father’s Day. The warmth of Consul-General Mr. Thanapol Wang-om-klang and the vibrant gathering at Stanley Park Pavilion reminded me of the strength of our cultural ties and the diversity that enriches our city.
I also had the joy of attending a pre-Hanukkah ceremony with members of Vancouver’s Jewish community, reaffirming our city’s commitment to inclusion and support during challenging times. Hanukkah’s message of resilience and hope resonates deeply as we reflect on this year.

Spotlight on Local Achievements
Destination Vancouver has had an incredible year, hosting major events like the Rolling Stones concert, Grey Cup Festival, and Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. Their efforts, led by CEO Royce Chwin, have shone a spotlight on our city, attracting global attention and bolstering our tourism economy.
In East Vancouver, the iconic East Van Cross remains a symbol of pride and resilience. I’m committed to ensuring it becomes even more prominent and accessible, celebrating its cultural significance.
I’m grateful to Global Morning News and host Jennifer Palma for having me on the program to discuss my Council motion on exploring the relocation of the East Van Cross monument. City staff to report back in Q3 2025 with a plan.
The 40th anniversary celebration of Terra Social Purpose Real Estate was a highlight, showcasing their invaluable contributions to not-for-profit housing. It was inspiring to join dozens of leaders in this space and acknowledge the transformative impact of their work.
Strengthening Community Ties and Supporting Families
This holiday season, I was grateful to volunteer alongside Councillor Sarah Kirby-Yung at Union Gospel Mission’s holiday hamper initiative, supporting families in need. Events like these underscore the importance of unity and giving during the festive season.
Congratulations are also due to the Victoria Drive Business Improvement Association for their successful holiday fundraising dinner. Community leaders and small business operators continue to play a vital role in shaping Vancouver’s future.
I was also delighted to sit down with Minister George Chow to explore a partnership with the City of Vancouver for nearly 100 new childcare spaces in his Vancouver-Fraserview riding. South Vancouver families have long struggled with childcare demand, and this collaboration could make a significant difference in addressing this vital need.
Visiting the headquarters of Aritzia’s global headquarters with many Council colleagues allowed for some holiday time fun, and a Santa cap in my case!
Honouring Heritage and Looking Forward
Touring the Vancouver Maritime Museum with Executive Director David Jordan was a reminder of our city’s rich maritime history. From the historic St. Roch ship to their exciting future plans, the museum is a treasure trove of stories that connect us to our past.
Equally inspiring was visiting the Casa Mia heritage home seniors care complex, beautifully restored by The Care Group. This project highlights the importance of preserving Vancouver’s architectural heritage while addressing modern needs.
The Year in Review
It was early on a Friday during the holiday break, but I’m really grateful to host Scott Shantz who invited me on Mornings with Simi on CKNW Radio to do a quick take on our mid-term on Council, and what to look forward to in the New Year. Here’s the interview if you care to listen: https://open.spotify.com/episode/5Fkb5DR6u28v5AclHostQb?si=WqDbMMxpQaCLvBfqXBlh3g&nd=1&dlsi=7c4ba5e5baaf4288
Remembering a Legacy
We were deeply saddened to lose Joe Average, one of Vancouver’s most celebrated artists and activists, on Christmas Eve. His tireless advocacy for AIDS awareness and support for organizations like PAL Vancouver have left an indelible mark on our city. Brock’s legacy of compassion and creativity will be cherished for years to come.
Warm Wishes for 2025
After the unrelenting rain of December, over the holiday break Vancouver was rewarded with a stunning clear afternoon that allowed me to enjoy a refreshing bike ride with my sister, taking in the beauty of our city and celebrating the joy of riding along our waterfront and across our neighbourhoods. Moments like these remind us of the importance of accessible and sustainable ways to connect with our surroundings.
As we step into the new year, I wish all Vancouverites a joyful and prosperous 2025. Whether you celebrated Hanukkah, Christmas, or other festivities, may the warmth of community and the promise of new beginnings inspire us all. Let’s continue working together to make Vancouver a city we are all proud to call home.
Happy New Year!
